Tips and hacks on how to guarantee a perfect burn,
best safety, more scent and a longer lifetime for your candle
A scented candle – sounds like an easy to use product. And it is! But so many people do not know the little tips and tricks that you need when you want to enjoy your candle for the longest time. We asked our wax specialists on their advice to guarantee a perfect burn and stay safe when burning a scented Bridgewater candle.
How long should the wick of my candle be?
Keep the wick nice and trimmed up. Wicks need to be kept at a healthy 0,5 cm length and should be trimmed prior to every burn, including the first one. Long wicks can split and drop debris into the wax. A shorter wick means a better wax pool, which means a better burn. With trimming your wick you prevent black smoke and the candle jar won’t get too hot. We suggest trimming the wick every 4 hours of burn time. Always extinguish the flame, let the candle cool down and trim the wick before relighting. You can use our Bridgewater wick trimmer for that.
Should I readjust the wick?
Yes! If your wick is not centred anymore after you burned your candle try to adjust it a bit to the centre when the wax is still soft. Be careful and don’t burn your hand.
How long shall I burn my candle and how does my candle burn evenly without wax waste, but with maximum fragrance?
Of course it’s up to you how long you like to enjoy your candle. But when you burn your candle – especially for the first time- it’s good to burn it for at least the time it takes for the upper wax layer to be a full pool. This can take around 4 hours for our large candle jar and ca. 2 hours for the small candle jars. It’s important to let the wax pool reach all the way to the edge of the container. This prevents tunneling and wax waste. It’s advised to burn candle jars typically for 4-6 hours at a time depending the size of jar. This way you will make sure that the upper wax layer melts completely which guarantees a nice and even melting process.
What’s the best and safest place to put a candle?
Always keep your burning candle on an even, heat resistant, and sturdy surface. Never burn your candle near anything that can catch fire, keep it out of drafts and keep them out of reach of kids and pets. Never leave it unattended while lit. If you would like to have a nice home scent in rooms that you can’t be in the whole time (e.g. your bathroom, bedroom etc.) just check out our no-flame products like sachets, reed diffusers or room sprays.
What do I do with the lid of my candle jar?
The lid of the candle is specifically made to prevent the candle and wax from dirt and dust. When you know that you will not burn your candle for some time, it’s better to close the jar with the lid to avoid the dust to settle. Dust can cause problems when burning and of course it’s also nice to have a clean candle without any dirt.
When should I stop burning my candle?
When there is approximately 1,5 cm of wax left in the bottom of your candle it’s time to stop burning. It’s okay for there to be some wax left over, candles are created with this little buffer of wax. When candles are burned below this level the container can get hot and burn you or the surface your candle is sitting on.
What do I do when my candle is burned completely?
Once your candle used all the wax, you can easily clean the glass jar and use it as a storage jar for small things like pins, buttons etc, or even snacks like candy or peanuts. For cleaning the jar it’s best to fill it with hot, boiling water, pour the water out and use a paper towel to take out the wax residue. You might need to repeat this process a couple of times until everything is gone. Be careful with hot water – it’s best to wear oven mitts.
